Madison Phono – Swiss Precision Meets Digital Signal Processing
Developed in collaboration with Wattson Audio's sister company, the elite Swiss brand CH Precision, the Madison Phono brings the pinnacle of Swiss micro-engineering and DSP digital processing technology to the realm of phono preamplification. This groundbreaking device pioneers the integration of high-precision DSP within a phono stage, performing equalisation (EQ) and cartridge loading in the digital domain. This approach effectively resolves the phase deviations inherent in traditional analogue RIAA networks caused by component aging and tolerance variations.
Key Specifications
Development & Origin: Designed, manufactured, and assembled in Switzerland (in deep collaboration with CH Precision)
Cartridge Input Support: 3 independent input architectures, supporting both traditional Moving Coil (MC) and DS Audio optical cartridges
EQ Curves & Loading: Cartridge loading and multiple historical EQ curves processed in the digital domain
Signal Outputs: Analogue outputs (XLR balanced / RCA unbalanced) and digital output (can be directly connected to Madison Streamer or high-end DACs)
Networking & Control: Ethernet RJ45 interface, compatible with Wattson Music App control and web-based setup interface
Chassis Construction: CNC-machined from a solid block of aerospace-grade aluminium (high rigidity, anti-vibration, and electromagnetic shielding)
Detailed Operation & Setup Guide
1. Hardware Setup
Turntable Input: Connect the tonearm cable to the Madison Phono input and secure the ground wire (GND) to the grounding terminal. For DS Audio optical cartridges, switch to the dedicated optical input architecture within the settings.
Signal Output Selection:
Analogue Direct: Use XLR or RCA to connect to a preamplifier or integrated amplifier.
Digital Direct: Connect via the digital output to the Madison Streamer or another DAC, allowing the decoding stage to handle the high-resolution digital signal.
Network Connection: Connect a LAN cable to the RJ45 port, ensuring the unit is on the same local network as your control device (phone/tablet).
2. Wattson Music App System Setup
Device Identification: Open the Wattson Music App (iOS/Android), and the system will automatically search for Madison Phono units on the same network.
Cartridge Loading Adjustment: Tap on the device to access the web control page, where you can precisely switch the optimal load impedance for MC cartridges and fine-tune gain settings.
EQ Curve Switching: Beyond the standard RIAA curve, you can instantly switch to early vinyl EQ standards such as Columbia and Decca without stopping playback.
Firmware Update (OTA): When a new version is available, you can complete the upgrade directly through the app to keep the algorithms up to date.
3. System Integration Suggestions
Optical Cartridge Users: With the Madison Phono, you can eliminate the need for DS Audio's original decoder box, as this single unit handles both optical power supply and signal processing.
Wattson Ecosystem: When the digital output is connected to the Madison Streamer / DAC, paired with the Power S external power supply and Madison Amplifier, the system delivers exceptionally high transparency, speed, and analytical layering—characteristic of CH Precision's sonic signature.
